Secure, Offline Backups
In place of film and paper photographs, we now take photos on digital cameras and cellular telephones. If there’s a backup of those photos, it’s usually with a cloud provider, like Apple, Google, or Microsoft.
What happens when you run out of storage in the cloud?
What if the cloud backup was never configured?
What if the cloud backup stopped working?
Unfortunately, we see that happen way too often. The photos are just lost.
Encrypted Backups
Offline Systems creates an encrypted backup of your photos, videos, and documents using a key that will be given only to you. The backup is put onto physical media, like DVDs, Blu-rays, or hard drives, so it can be kept in a safe place. Ideally, multiple copies would be kept in separate locations, all separately from the encryption key.
Restoring Backups
Should that data ever need to be recovered, your key would be used to decrypt the data from the storage media, restored to wherever you want it. Because Offline Systems uses GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) for encryption, we don’t even need to be the people to restore the backup. The software is freely available, and your backup is in your control.
Decrypting takes both the key and the backup.
No one, including Offline Systems, can restore or access the data without both your consent and access to the key.
